Orlando performs activities of several kinds not always permanently structured. Some non-conventional methods of promotion of psychomotrist development and learning have been enacted with better and better results. Other trials are going to be developed by the scientific committee and to be posted in this section furnishing proof of outcomes in order to give suggestions and support to the families of children suffering from Orlando’s disease.

MUSIC THERAPY

Orlando is particularly attracted to sounds, noises and music; therefore we have decided to introduce music therapy activity in order to enable and favour expression, communication, relationships, learning and fine motility.

This activity takes place once a week at the Cremona UONPIA with the music therapist, Laura Gamba.

According to the definition of WFMT (World Federation of Music Therapy)

“Music therapy is the use of music and/or musical elements(sound, rhythm, melody and harmony by a qualified music therapist, with one person or a group, to facilitate and favour communication, relationships, learning, motility, expression, organization and other important therapeutic objectives in order to meet physical, emotional, mental, social and cognitive requirements.

Music therapy aims to develop the potential and/or residual functions of the individual in such a way that the latter will be able to improve his/her quality of life thanks to a preventive, rehabilitative, or therapeutic process”.

Among the definitions of music therapy, this proves to be suitable to clarify the objectives and the modalities of music therapeutic treatment for children with development diseases that are so serious as to compromise the relationship with the external environment and the harmonization of the growth process. In these cases, music therapy mainly uses sound and voice to open and activate communication channels and to start the relationship building process inside which to promote harmonization processes also with the aim of facilitating learning and growth. The technique used is auditory dialogue based on the principles of empathy and syntonization . In auditory dialogue we use the parameters of sound, mainly intensity and duration, but also pitch and timbre – as well as the connection between these and motion – in order to facilitate expression and communication through the relationship with the therapist.

By using the technique of mirroring – based as already stated on empathy and syntonization – the therapist catches the child’s spontaneous sound productions, mirrors and amplifies them giving them meaning, reinforcing and motivating the child to further production inside the communicative exchange. This activity positively contributes to building the relationship with the external environment and greatly decreases the tendency to isolation and introversion, characterized by stereotypy and meaninglessness of gestures and sound, which on the contrary, become meaningful and rewarding inside the auditory dialogues.

Starting from these moments of exchange and interaction the therapist can introduce suggestions of learning activities, for example leading the child to experiment and consolidate the functional use of his/her hands on instruments, thereby diversifying the use of his/her hands according to the different characteristics of each instrument.

Legs and feet can also be engaged in relationships and communicative exchange through sound.
